Joashs son Gideon was threshing wheat inside the wine press to keep it hidden from the Midianites, when the angel of Yahweh said to him, 'Yahweh is with you, mighty warrior.'

'But sir,' said Gideon, 'if Yahweh is with us, then why is all this happening to us? Yahweh has deserted us and handed us over to the Midianites.'

Then Yahweh turned to him and said, 'Go and rescue Israel from the Midianites. Have I not sent you?'

Gideon said to him, 'But lord, how can I rescue Israel? My clan is the weakest in Mannasseh, and I am the least important in my family.'

Yahweh replied, 'I will be with you and will strike down the Midianites as if they were one man.'

Gideon said to him, 'Give me a sign to prove that it is really you speaking to me. Do not leave until I return and present you an offering.'

Yahweh said to him, 'I shall stay here until you return.'

Gideon went and prepared a young goat and unlevened bread. He put the meat into a basket and the broth into a pot.

He brought them and the angel of Yahweh said to him, 'Put the meat and the unleavened bread on this rock, and pour the broth on them.'

Gideon did so, and the angel of Yahweh touched the meat with the tip of his staff.

Fire flared from the rock and consumed the meat and the bread, and the angel of Yahweh disappeared.

Then Gideon knew it was the angel of Yahweh, and he said, 'Alas, my lord Yahweh, for I have seen the angel of Yahweh face to face!'

Yahweh said to him, 'Be at peace. Do not be afraid, you are not going to die.'
