That night, Yahweh said to Gideon, 'Take your father's bull and pull down his altar to Baal and cut down the Asherah pole beside it.'

'Then build a proper altar to Yahweh on the hill, and offer the bull as a burnt sacrifice using the wood of the Asherah pole.'
Gideon did as Yahweh told him. Since he was afraid of his father's family and the men of the town, he did it at night instead of in daylight.

In the morning, the men of the town saw that the Baal's altar had been destroyed, the Asherah pole cut down, and the bull sacrificed on the new altar. 'Who has done this?' they asked one another.
After investigating and inquiring around, they concluded 'Gideon son of Joash has done this.' And the men of the town said to Joash, 'Bring out your son so we can execute him for destroying Baal's altar and the Asherah pole.'
Joash said to the crowd confronting him, 'Will you fight Baal's battles for him? Will you rescue Baal? Whoever fights for Baal will be dead before morning!'
