Korah the Levite and the Reubenites, Dathan, Abiram, and On, then took action and rebelled against Moses with two hundred and fifty Israelites -- community leaders, and men of repute.
They assembled to oppose Moses and Aaron and said to them, 'Enough of you! The whole community is holy, every one of them, and Yahweh is among them. Why then do you set yourselves above Yahweh's community?'
2 of 18 Numbers 16:3
On hearing this, Moses fell facedown and said to Korah, 'Tomorrow morning, you and your followers shall put fire and incense in your censers and lay them before Yahweh, and Yahweh will choose who is holy.'
But Dathan and Abiram replied 'Abiram and I will not come. Isn't it enough that you brought us out of a land flowing with milk and honey only to kill us in the desert? Must you also make yourself our absolute ruler?'
'Moreover, you haven't brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey, nor given us an inheritance of fields and vineyards. Do you think you can hoodwink these men? No, Dathan and I will not come!'
5 of 18 Numbers 16:14
Moses flew into a rage and said to Yahweh, 'I have not taken a single donkey from them, nor have I done harm to any of them.'
6 of 18 Numbers 16:15
Then Moses said to Korah, 'You and all your followers come before Yahweh tomorrow, each man with his censer and incense -- 250 censers.'
7 of 18 Numbers 16:16
The next day, each of Korah's men took his censer, put fire and incense in it, and stood at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting with Moses and Aaron.
8 of 18 Numbers 16:18
Then the glory of Yahwen appears to the whole community, and Yahweh said to Moses, 'Get away from this community. I am going to destroy them here and now.'
Moses and Aaron fell facedown and cried out, 'O God, will you be angry with the whole community for the sin of one man?'
10 of 18 Numbers 16:22
Yahweh said to Moses, 'Tell the community to stand well clear of tents of Korah, Dathan and Abiram.'
Moses stood up and went to Datham and Abiram. Dathan and Abiram had come out and were standing with their wives, children and little ones at the entrances to their tents.
Moses said, 'This is how you will know that Yahweh has sent me to perform all these tasks and that they are not done of my own accord: if these people die a natural death, then Yahweh has not sent me.'
'But if Yahweh does something utterly new -- if the earth should open its mouth and swallow them up and all their belongings, so that they go down alive to Sheol, then you will know that they held Yahweh in contempt.'
14 of 18 Numbers 16:30
The moment he finished saying all this, the ground split apart under their feet, the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them, their families -- all Korah's people and all their property.
They went down to Sheol alive with all their belongings. The earth closed over them, and they disappeared in the middle of the community.
16 of 18 Numbers 16:33
At their cries, all the Israelites around them took to their heels, saying, 'We do not want the Earth to swallow us too!'

Fire then shot out from Yahweh and consumed the two hundred and fifty men offering incense. Next story: A Plague on the Sympathizers
