This was very upsetting to Jonah and he became furious, saying to Yahweh: I knew this would happen, and that’s why I ran from you! You show great mercy and do not carry out your threats. So just kill me, because I’d rather die than live!

Jonah sat down and Yahweh God caused a little plant to grow so large it covered Jonah with shade, providing relief from his misery, causing him to feel joy.

The next morning God caused the plant to shrivel up. With the sun beating down on him, Jonah despaired, saying: I would rather die than live!

Then God said to Jonah: Are you really so angry over this little plant? And Jonah said: Yes! I’m so angry I could die!

Yahweh replied: If you are so protective of a plant you didn’t raise and which lived and died in a single day, shouldn’t I be protective of a city of over 120,000 people who don’t know right from wrong? And their many cattle?
