One day Yahweh said to Jonah: Go to the great city of Nineveh and proclaim: ‘Yahweh has seen your wickedness and it will be punished!’

But instead, Jonah ran away from Yahweh.

At Joppa, he boarded a merchant ship headed to Tarshish, far away from Yahweh.

But Yahweh hurled a violent storm against the ship that threatened to break it into pieces.

The sailors each cried out to their own gods in terror.

Then they threw all the ship’s cargo into the sea to make the ship lighter.

Meanwhile, Jonah had gone below deck and was fast asleep. The ship’s captain found him and said: Why are you asleep? Get up and beg your god to spare us so we don’t die!

Jonah told the sailors he was running away from Yahweh and said: Pick me up and throw me into the sea! It’s my fault this violent storm is upon you!

With the storm getting worse and worse, they picked up Jonah and threw him overboard.

And immediately the sea became calm.
