Darius became the next king. He appointed many regional governors to help him rule the kingdom. Because he was the most skilled, he put Daniel over all the governors. Seeing his elevated status, the governors began to plot against him.
They convinced the king to enact a law such that anyone found praying to a god or human other than the king must be thrown into a den of lions.
Now 3 times a day Daniel would kneel, face toward Jerusalem, and pray to his God as he had always done. When the king heard about this, he was greatly distressed, but agreed the law must be followed.
So Daniel was thrown in the lions’ den. And the king said to him: May the God you so faithfully serve rescue you. And a stone was then placed over the opening and sealed.
Back at his palace that night, King Darius ate no food and he was unable to sleep.
5 of 9 Daniel 6:18
At dawn, the king rushed to the lions’ den, and called out: Daniel, servant of the living God, was the God you serve so faithfully able to save you from the lions?
Daniel replied: My God has sent an angel to close the mouths of the lions. They have not harmed me because I am innocent before God. And the king was greatly relieved.
Then he ordered that all the governors who plotted against Daniel be thrown into the lions’ den along with all their wives and children. The lions tore them apart before they even touched the ground.
8 of 9 Daniel 6:24
King Darius then announced to all the people of the world: I hereby issue an edict that all people must revere and fear the God of Daniel who rescued him from the lions!
