Later, when Nebuchadnezzar’s son Belshazzar was king of Babylon, he threw a great banquet for all his nobles. They drank from vessels that had been taken from the temple in Jerusalem as they praised their own gods.

Suddenly a human hand appeared and wrote on the palace wall. The king turned white and his knees knocked together in fear.

Belshazzar summoned the astrologers, wise men, and diviners, but none of them could interpret the writing, so the king and his guests were terrified.

Then the queen said: Don’t be frightened! And she summoned Daniel who, having a spirit of the gods, had helped Belshazzar’s father with his insight, discernment, and extraordinary wisdom.

Daniel told the king: You drank from vessels of Yahweh’s temple as you praised your own gods. The writing says this: ‘Your days are numbered. You are weighed on the balance and found wanting.’ That very night, Belshazzar, king of Babylon, was killed.
