When Job's three friends Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar heard about the evils that had befallen him, they came to comfort and console him. When they spotted him from a distance, they did not recognize him.
1 of 34 Job 2:11–12
They wept loudly and sat on the ground with him for seven days and nights. No one said a word to him, for they could see that his pain was very great.
2 of 34 Job 2:12–13
After this, Job spoke, saying, 'Why is life given to those in misery, bitter in soul, longing for a death that does not come?'
'Moans are my only food, and groans flow out like water. I have no peace, no rest, only torments.'
4 of 34 Job 3:24, 26
Then Eliphaz spoke, saying, 'Consider this. Who that was innocent has ever perished? Where have righteous people ever been destroyed?'
5 of 34 Job 4:1, 7
'Blessed is the man who God corrects! Do not despise the discipline of Shaddhai. He wounds, but he also bandages. He strikes, but he also heals.'
6 of 34 Job 5:17–18
Then Job answered, saying, 'Where have I done wrong? Show me, and I will be quiet. But do not judge me falsely, for my righteousness is intact.'
7 of 34 Job 6:1, 24, 29
'My body is covered in worms and filthy scabs. My skin is broken and festering. Therefore, I will not keep quiet, but will speak out from the anguish of my soul.'
8 of 34 Job 7:5, 11
'What is man that you pay so much attention to him, and test him at every moment? If I have sinned, what harm has it done you, O watcher of men? Why do you refuse to forgive me?'
Then Bildad spoke, saying, 'Does God pervert justice? Certainly God would not forsake a perfectly righteous man, nor give aid to an evildoer.'
10 of 34 Job 8:1, 3, 20
Job answered, saying, 'How can a man argue his innocence before God? Who contends with him and survives? Who dares to question his actions? He overturns mountains in his anger. He does not restrain his fury.'
'Even though I am innocent, if I summoned God, he would not listen to my case--he who crushes me with a tempest, and multiplies my injuries for no reason.'
12 of 34 Job 9:15–17
'He destroys the righteous and the wicked. When a disaster brings sudden death, he laughs at the despair of the innocent.'
13 of 34 Job 9:22–23
Then Zophar spoke, saying, 'Is all this talk to go unanswered? How I wish God would speak and reveal to you his wisdom, for then you would know that God has punished you less than your sin actually deserves!'
14 of 34 Job 11:1, 5–6
Job answered, saying, 'I have become a laughing stock to my friends though I am perfectly righteous. Meanwhile the homes of robbers prosper in security, and God provides for them.'
15 of 34 Job 12:1, 6
'You are worthless physicians, all of you! If only you would keep silent, that would be wisdom for you. Now listen to my argument. God may kill me, but I will nonetheless defend my ways to his face.'
16 of 34 Job 13:4–6
'Just grant me two things, O God: remove your hand from me and stop making me afraid with your terrors. Then summon me, and I will answer.'
17 of 34 Job 13:20–22
'How many wrongs and sins have I committed? Show me my offense and my sin. Why do you hide your face and treat me as your enemy?'
18 of 34 Job 13:23–24
Then Eliphaz spoke, saying, 'Your sin guides your words so that you turn your spirit against God! What is man that he could be righteous? If God does not even trust the Holy Ones, how much less is man who is filthy and corrupt?'
Job answered, saying, 'What miserable comforters you all are! If you were in my place, I could also speak against you, but my talking would comfort you, my words would bring you relief.'
20 of 34 Job 16:1
'God has turned me over to evil men--seized me by the neck and crushed me. Without pity he pierces my kidneys and spills my bile on the ground.'
21 of 34 Job 16:11
'My breath is repulsive to my wife, my stench unbearable to my brothers. Even little boys insult me.'
22 of 34 Job 19:17
'Have pity on me, my friends, for the hand of God has struck me. Why persecute me as God is doing?'
23 of 34 Job 19:21
Then Zophar spoke, saying, 'The happiness of the wicked is short-lived. Though his pride reaches the heavens, he perishes forever like his own dung.'
24 of 34 Job 20:1, 4–7
'He consumes great wealth, but God will make him vomit it up. God sends his furious anger against him, raining down blows on him.'
25 of 34 Job 20:15, 23
Job answered, saying, 'The wicked grow old, gain in prosperity, and see their children succeed. They go down to Sheol in peace.'
'You might say "God stores up a man's punishments for his sons." But let him repay the man himself so that he knows it! Let his own eyes see his destruction!'
27 of 34 Job 21:19
'So how can you console me with your nonsense? Your explanations are nothing but falsehood! O that I could be like I was months ago when God watched over me and my children were around me.'
28 of 34 Job 21:19
Then Eliphaz spoke, saying, 'Do you think it's for your piety that God punishes you and brings justice on you? It is for your great wickedness and innumerable sins!'
'You stripped men of their clothes! You withheld water from the thirsty and food from the hungry! You sent widows away empty-handed and crushed the arms of orphans! This is why snares are all around you and sudden fears terrify you.'
30 of 34 Job 22:7, 9–10
Job answered, saying, 'I have never deviated from his commands, but his hand is heavy against me despite my groaning. If only I knew where to find him, I would go to his house and I would state my case before him.'
