Rehoboam died and his son Abijah succeeded him as king of Judah.
There was war between Abijah and Jeroboam. Abijah went into battle with 400,000 fighting men.
Jeroboam formed his battle line with 800,000 fighting men.
Then Abijah stood on Mount Zemaraim in the hill country of Ephraim, and said, 'You have a vast army, but did you not drive away the descendants of Aaron, the Levite priests, and appoint priests of your own?'
'But our priests are descendants of Aaron, and they offer burnt sacrifices to Yahweh every morning and every evening!'
'We are observing Yahweh's regulations, while you have renounced him! Israelites, do not fight against Yahweh the god of your ancestors, for you will not win!'
Now Jeroboam had sent some troops to attack them from behind in an ambush. When Judah turned and saw that the battle was both in front and behind them, they cried out to Yahweh for help.
And Yahweh struck down all of Israel before Abijah and Judah.
Abijah and his army defeated them in a great slaughter.
500,000 fighting men of Israel were killed.
Abijah pursued Jeroboam and captured the cities of Bethel, Jeshanah, and Ephron.
And Jeroboam never regained power during the reign of Abijah.
