When all of Israel heard about the return of Jeroboam, they assembled and made him king over Israel.
1 of 19 1 Kings 12:20
Jeroboam fortified Shechem in the Ephraim hill country and lived there.
2 of 19 1 Kings 12:25
Jeroboam thought to himself, 'If these people continue to go to the Temple of Yahweh in Jerusalem, their loyalty will turn to Rehoboam, and they will kill me.'
So after giving the matter consideration, Jeroboam made two golden calves.
4 of 19 1 Kings 12:28
He said to the people, 'You have gone to Jerusalem long enough. Here are your gods, O Israel, that brought you up out of Egypt!'
He set one up in Bethel.
6 of 19 1 Kings 12:29
And he set the other up in Dan. And the people came to Bethel and to Dan to worship the calves. Jeroboam also appointed priests who were not Levites.
Then Jeroboam instituted a festival in Bethel during the eighth month, like the one held in Judah. He offered sacrifices on the altar he had built there.
Just then Yahweh sent a man of God from Judah. He arrived and spoke these words of Yahweh against the altar: 'O altar, altar! This is what Yahweh says...'
'"Behold, a man named Josiah will be born to the dynasty of David. On you he will slaughter the priests who offer sacrifices on you. On you he will burn human bones!"'
10 of 19 1 Kings 13:2
'"As a sign that Yahweh has spoken, this altar will split open and the ashes will spill out."'
11 of 19 1 Kings 13:3
Having heard this, Jeroboam extended his hand and said, 'Seize him!'
12 of 19 1 Kings 13:4
But the hand he extended became withered and he could not pull it back.
13 of 19 1 Kings 13:4
Then the altar was split apart and its ashes poured out.
14 of 19 1 Kings 13:5
The king said to the man of God, 'Appease Yahweh your god so that my hand is restored!'
15 of 19 1 Kings 13:6
So the man of God appeased Yahweh, and the king's hand was restored back to the way it had been.
16 of 19 1 Kings 13:6
The king said to the man of God, 'Come home with me and eat, and I shall give you a gift.'
17 of 19 1 Kings 13:7
But the man of God said, 'Even if you were to give me half your kingdom, I could not go with you. For Yahweh commanded me, "Do not eat food, drink water, or return the same way you came."'
18 of 19 1 Kings 13:8–9
So he departed by another road, and did not return the same way he came.
