Solomon's son Rehoboam succeeded him as king. He was 41 years old when he became king. His mother was an Ammonite woman named Naamah.
When Jeroboam heard the news, he returned from Egypt where he had fled from King Solomon.
All Israel assembled in Shechem to make Rehoboam king.

Jeroboam and the whole Israelite assembly came and said to Rehoboam, 'Your father placed a heavy yoke on us. Lighten the harsh labor and heavy yoke your father put on us, and we will be your subjects.'
But Rehoboam said, 'My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to it! My father punished you with whips, but I will punish you with scorpions!'

When they saw that the king refused to listen to them, all Israel said to him, 'We have no share in David! O Israel, return to your homes! Look after your own kingdom, O David!'

So all Israel returned to their homes. The king did not listen to the people because these events were brought about by Yahweh.
King Rehoboam sent out Adoniram, the taskmaster of the forced labor crews.

King Rehoboam mounted his chariot and fled to Jerusalem. And so Israel has been in rebellion against the dynasty of David to this very day.
