Jeroboam of Ephraim was a talented man, and Solomon had made him the taskmaster of the forced labor crews of the tribe of Joseph.
Around this time it happened that as Jeroboam was going out from Jerusalem, the prophet Ahijah of Shilo found him on the road, and the two of them were alone out in the open country.

Ahijah was dressed in a new garment, and he took the garment and tore it into twelve pieces.
He said to Jeroboam, 'Take ten pieces, for Yahweh, god of Israel, says, "Look, I am about to tear the kingdom from Solomon and I will give ten tribes to you."'

'"This is because he has renounced me and worshipped Astarte, Chemosh, and Molech. He has not obeyed my commandments and regulations. For this I will humiliate the descendants of David."'
'"To Solomon's son I will give one tribe for the sake of my servant David, but to you I will give ten tribes."'
'"If you obey my commandments and regulations like my servant David did, I will give you a lasting dynasty and I will give Israel to you.'"

And so Solomon tried to kill Jeroboam.

But Jeroboam fled to Egypt.

He went to King Shishak of Egypt, and stayed in Egypt until Solomon was dead.
