Solomon banished Abiathar from the priesthood, and when the news reached Joab, he fled to the tabernacle of Yahweh and grabbed ahold of the horns of the altar.
When King Solomon was told, that Joab had fled to the tabernacle of Yahweh and was beside the altar, he commanded Benaiah, 'Go and kill him.'

Benaiah went to the tabernacle of Yahweh and said to Joab, 'The king commands you to come out!'

But Joab said, 'No, I will die here.'

When Benaiah reported Joab's answer to the king, King Solomon commanded Benaiah, 'Do what he says. Kill him and may the blood of Abner and Amasa be on Joab's descendants forever.'
So Benaiah went and killed Joab.
