Absalom had made Amasa the commanding general of the army in place of Joab. And Absalom and all the men of Israel crossed the Jordan.

David went to Mahanaim and assembled the army that was with him, and said to the troops, 'Indeed, I, too, will go into battle with you!'

The king said to the troops, 'I will do what seems best to you.' So the king stayed behind as the army marched out.

David gave this order to his army commanders Joab, Abishai, and Ittai, 'For my sake, deal gently with the young man Absalom.' And the entire army heard him give this command concerning Absalom.

As Absalom was riding his mule, it went under the branches of a large oak tree.

And Absalom's head got caught in the oak.

He was suspended in midair while the mule kept going. And one man saw this.

He reported it to Joab, saying, 'I saw Absalom hanging in an oak tree.'

Joab took three daggers and thrust them into the middle of Absalom while he was still alive in the middle of the oak tree.

Ten soldiers who were Joab's armor bearers then finished him off.

They took Absalom and threw him in a large pit in the forest and stacked stones over him.
