Absalom had made Amasa the commanding general of the army in place of Joab. And Absalom and all the men of Israel crossed the Jordan.
David went to Mahanaim and assembled the army that was with him, and said to the troops, 'Indeed, I, too, will go into battle with you!'
But the soldiers said, 'Do not go into battle! It is better for you to remain in the city for support.'
