Sometime later the king of the Ammonites died, and his son Hanun succeeded him.

So David sent messengers to express their condolences over his father.

But when David's messengers reached the land of the Ammonites, the Ammonite nobles said to Hanun, 'Do you think David is really honoring your father? Are they not here to spy on the city so they can overthrow it?'
So Hanun seized David's messengers, shaved off half of each of their beards, cut off the clothes at the buttocks, and sent them away.
