During David’s reign there was a famine that lasted for three continuous years.

So David sought the face of Yahweh, and Yahweh said, 'It is because of Saul and his bloody family. Because he killed the Gibeonites.'

The Gibeonites were not Israelites, but the Israelites had vowed to spare them. However, in his zeal for the people of Israel and Judah, Saul had sought to annihilate them.

So the king summoned the Gibeonites and asked, 'How can I make amends so that you will bless Yahweh's inheritance?'
They replied, 'Hand over to us seven sons of the man who sought to dismember and annihilate us, and we will dismember them before Yahweh at Gibeon.'
The king said, 'I will hand them over.'

The king took Saul's two sons Armoni and Mephibaal, whose mother was Rizpah, along with the five sons of Saul's daughter Merab, and he handed them over to the Gibeonites.
And the Gibeonites dismembered them before Yahweh on the mountain.

The seven of them died together. They were killed on the first days of harvest.

From the beginning of the harvest until rain fell from the sky, Rizpah kept away the birds during the day.

And she kept away the wild animals during the night.

David was told of what Saul's concubine Rizpah had done. And the bones of those who had been dismembered were gathered up.
David brought the bones of Saul and his son Jonathan, and they buried the bones in the land of Benjamin at the grave of his father Kish.

After this Yahweh heeded their prayers concerning the land.
