While the Philistines were reviewing their troops, the Philistine leaders asked, 'What are these Hebrews doing here?'
Achish said to the Philistine leaders, 'This is David, servant of King Saul of Israel, who has been with me for years. Since the day he deserted I've found no fault with him.'
2 of 7 1 Samuel 29:3
But the Philistine leaders became angry and said, 'Send him back, for in battle he might turn on us! Isn't this David of whom they sang, "Saul has killed his thousands, but David his tens of thousands?" What better way to please his lord than with the heads of our men?'
So Achish summoned David and said to him, 'You are an upright man, and I find no fault with you, but the Philistine leaders do not approve of you. So turn back and go in peace.'
But David said, 'What have I done that I should not go and fight the enemies of my lord the king?'

Achish replied, 'The Philistine leaders have said, "He must not go with us into battle," and you must not do what is wrong in the eyes of the Philistine leaders.'
So early the next morning, David and his men set out to return to the land of the Philistines.
