There was a very wealthy man in Maon who owned 3,000 sheep and 1,000 goats. His name was Nabal and his wife's name was Abigail.
David heard that Nabal was shearing his sheep, and he sent servants to say to Nabal, 'I hear that you are shearing sheep. When your shepherds were in Carmel, we neither insulted nor harmed them. Now please provide your son David and us with whatever you have at hand.'
But Nabal said to David's servants, 'Who is this David son of Jesse? Why should I take the bread, water, and meat I have slaughtered for my shearers and give it to some men coming from who knows where?'
They returned and told David all these things, and David said, 'I guarded all of this man's possessions in the desert, taking nothing, but he repays me with evil.'
David said, 'May God curse me and worse if by morning I've left alive a single of his men that piss against the wall!' And he commanded his men, saying, 'Each of you strap on your sword!'
But one of Nabal's servants said to Abigail, 'David sent messengers to greet our lord, but he yelled at them. These men did not insult us and provided protection when we tended our flocks.'
So Abigail loaded donkeys with 200 loaves of bread, two wine skins, five prepared sheep, five bags of roasted grain, 100 bunches of raisins, and 200 figs. She told her servants, 'Go ahead and I will follow you.' But she did not tell her husband Nabal.
Riding on her donkey, she came upon David and his men. She fell at his feet and said, 'My lord, let this gift be given to the servants who follow my lord, for Yahweh will certainly establish the house of my lord, making you leader over Israel!'
David said to Abigail, 'If you had not come so quickly to meet me, by dawn's light not one male belonging to Nabal would have remained alive! Go to your home in peace.'
