The Philistines mustered their troops for battle between Socoh and Azekah in Judah.
1 of 17 1 Samuel 17:1
And Saul mustered the Israelite army and arranged their battle line opposite the Philistines.
2 of 17 1 Samuel 17:2
Then a duelist named Goliath of Gath came out of the Philistine camp. He was nine and a half feet tall with a bronze helmet and bronze body armor that weighed 5,000 shekels. He wore bronze leg armor and had a bronze javelin on his back. The shaft of his spear was like a weaver's beam, with its iron point weighing 600 shekels. And his shield bearer walked ahead of him.
Goliath stood and called out to the Israelites, 'Why do you come out and align yourselves for battle? Choose one man. If he is able to kill me, we will become your subjects, but if I prevail and kill him, you will become our subjects.'
4 of 17 1 Samuel 17:8
When Saul and all the Israelites heard this, they were upset and afraid.
5 of 17 1 Samuel 17:11
The Philistine came out every morning and every evening for forty days and took his stand. 'Give me a man,' he said, 'and we will fight it out!'
6 of 17 1 Samuel 17:16
Now Jesse of Bethlehem's three oldest sons had followed Saul to war. And Jesse said to David, 'Take these loaves of bread to your brothers, and give this cheese to the commander of their unit.'
David got up early the next morning and took the provisions to the camp. He arrived just as the army was going out to the battle lines and shouting their battle cry.
8 of 17 1 Samuel 17:20
David left the provisions with the supply officer and ran up to the front lines just as Goliath was coming out. He said what he usually said, and David heard it.
David asked the men standing near him, 'Who is this uncircumcised Philistine to defy the army of the living God? What will be done for the man who kills this Philistine?'
10 of 17 1 Samuel 17:26
'The king will give him great riches,' said the men, 'and give him his daughter, and exempt his father's family from paying taxes.'
11 of 17 1 Samuel 17:25
David's eldest brother heard him speaking to these men, and he said to David, 'Why have you come here? I know how conceited and deceitful you are! You came only to see the battle!'
12 of 17 1 Samuel 17:28
But what David said was reported to Saul, and David was summoned to him. And Saul said, 'You cannot go against this Philistine and fight him, for you are just a boy and he has been a warrior since his youth.'
David said, 'While tending sheep, when a lion or bear took one of the flock, I would chase him, strike him, and rescue it out of his mouth.'
'When it turned against me, I would grab its beard and strike and kill it. Your servant has killed both lion and bear this way.'
'This uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them for challenging the army of the living God.'
16 of 17 1 Samuel 17:36
So Saul said to David, 'Go, and may Yahweh be with you!'
