Now the Israelites were distressed that day, because Saul had put the troops under oath, saying, 'A curse on anyone who eats food before evening--before I have taken vengeance on my enemies!'
1 of 19 1 Samuel 14:24
So none of the troops had eaten anything, and now the whole army entered into the forest where they found honey on the ground. But no one ate it out of fear of the oath.
But having not heard his father's oath, Jonathan put the end of his rod into the honey, and when he ate it, his eyes were brightened.
3 of 19 1 Samuel 14:27
Then one of the troops said to him, 'Your father put the people under oath saying, A curse on anyone who eats today. '
4 of 19 1 Samuel 14:28
Jonathan replied, 'If the people had eaten some of the plunder from their enemies, wouldn't the slaughter of the Philistines have been even greater?'
That day the Israelites struck down the Philistines until they were utterly exhausted.
6 of 19 1 Samuel 14:31
And the army pounced on the plunder, slaughtering sheep, cattle, and calves, and eating the meat raw.
7 of 19 1 Samuel 14:32
And Saul was told, 'The people are sinning against Yahweh by eating raw meat!'
8 of 19 1 Samuel 14:33
Saul said, 'Do not sin against Yahweh and eat raw meat! You have acted treacherously!'
9 of 19 1 Samuel 14:34
And Saul built an altar to Yahweh. It was the first altar he had built to Yahweh.
10 of 19 1 Samuel 14:35
Then Saul said, 'Let's go by cover of night and plunder the Philistines until dawn. We won't leave a single one of them alive!'
11 of 19 1 Samuel 14:36
Saul consulted with God, asking, 'Should I chase after the Philistines? Will you deliver them into my hands?'
12 of 19 1 Samuel 14:37
But he did not reply, so Saul said to the army leaders, 'Find out what sin has been committed today. Even if it lies with my son Jonathan, he will certainly be put to death!'
None one in the army spoke up, so Saul said, 'Yahweh, God of Israel, if this sin is in me or Jonathan give urim , if the sin is in the people of Israel, give thummim .'
The lot indicated Saul and Jonathan, so Saul said, 'Cast the lot between me and Jonathan.'
Jonathan was indicated, and he said, 'I ate a little honey off the end of my rod, and so I must be killed?'
Saul replied, 'God shall curse me and worse if you are not killed, Jonathan!'
17 of 19 1 Samuel 14:44
But the army said to Saul, 'Shall Jonathan who saved Israel be killed? Not one hair of his head shall fall to the ground!'
18 of 19 1 Samuel 14:45
So Jonathan was rescued and did not die, and Saul stopped persuing the Philistines, and the Philistines went back to their lands.
