There was a prominent Benjaminite named Kish who had a son named Saul, a handsome young man. Amongst all the Israelites, no one was more handsome, and he stood head and shoulders taller than anyone else. Now Kish's donkeys were lost, and Kish said to Saul, 'Take one of the slaves and go look for the donkeys.'
They went through the highlands of Ephraim, and through the lands of Shalishah, but did not find them.

Samuel replied, 'I am the seer. Don't worry about the donkeys you are looking for, they are found. And for whom is everything desirable in Israel if not you and your father's family?'
Saul replied, 'Am I not from the smallest tribe of Israel? And from the least family in Benjamin? Why do you speak like this to me?'

When Saul stopped prophesying, he went to Gibeah and his uncle asked him and his slave, 'Where have you been?'
'Looking for the donkeys,' said Saul, 'but when we did not find them, we went to Samuel.' And Saul's uncle said, 'Tell me what Samuel said to you.'
'He told us that the donkeys were already found,' said Saul, but he did not tell him anything Samuel had said about the kingship.
