After this, Samson fell in love with a woman named Delilah in the Valley of Sorek.

The Philistines leaders visited her and said, 'Entice him. Find out what makes him so strong and how we can overpower, bind, and humiliate him. And we will each give you eleven hundred silver pieces.'

So Delilah said to Samson, 'Tell me what makes you so strong, and how you can be overpowered, bound and humiliated.'

Samson said to her, 'If I were bound with seven fresh bowstrings not yet dried, I would become as weak as any other man.'

So Philistine leaders brought her seven fresh bowstrings not yet dried, and she bound him with them.

The men hid in the bedroom and she said to him, 'Samson! The Philistines are upon you!'

But Samson snapped the bowstrings like thread that touches a fire, and the source of his strength was not discovered.

Delilah said to Samson, 'You lied to me and made a fool of me. Now tell me how you can be bound.'

Samson said to her, 'If I were bound tightly with new ropes that have never been used, I would become as weak as any other man.'

So Delilah took new ropes and bound him and said to him, 'Samson! The Philistines are upon you!' while the men were hiding in the room.

But Samson snapped off the ropes like they were threads.

Delilah said to Samson, 'Up to now you have lied to me and made a fool of me. Now tell me how you can be bound.'

Samson said to her, 'If you weave the seven braids of my head into the fabric on the loom and tighten it with the pin, I would become as weak as any other man.'

So she lulled him to sleep and wove the seven braids of his hair into the fabric on the loom and tightened it with the pin.

Then she said to him, 'Samson! The Philistines are upon you!', but Samson woke from his sleep and tore loose of the pin of the loom and the fabric.

Delilah said to Samson, 'How can you say that you love me when your heart is not with me? Three times you have made a fool of me and have not told me what makes you so strong.'

She continued nagging with such words day after day until he became sick to death of it.

Finally he told her his secret, saying, 'My hair has never been cut, because I have been set apart to God since birth. If my head were shaved, my strength would leave me, and I would become as weak as any other man.

Delilah realized that he had truly revealed his secret, and she summoned the Philistine leaders once again and they brought their silver.

So Delilah lulled Samson to sleep on her lap and then summoned a man to shave off his hair the seven braids of his hair, and his strength left him.

20 of 23 Judges 16:19

She said to him, 'Samson! The Philistines are upon you!' Samson woke from his sleep and thought, 'I will do as before and shake myself free,' but he did not know that Yahweh had left him.

21 of 23 Judges 16:20–21

The Philistines captured him and gouged out his eyes.

They bound him in bronze shackles and made him a grinder in the prison.
