The Philistines marched into Judah and prepared to attack the town of Lehi.

The men of Judah asked, 'Why have you come to fight us?'

The Philistines replied, 'We have come to capture Samson and treat him as he treated us.'

Three thousand men from Judah went to the cave in the rock at Etam and said to Samson, 'Don't you know the Philistines rule over us? Why have you done this to us?' Samson replied, 'I have treated them as they treated me.'

The men of Judah said to him, 'We have come to capture you and hand you over to the Philistines.'

Samson said to them, 'Promise me that you won't harm me.' They replied, 'We will only tie you up and hand you over to the Philistines. We will not harm you.'
So they tied Samson up with two new ropes and led him up from the rock.

Arriving at Lehi, the Philistines shouted as he approached.

Then the spirit of Yahweh seized Samson, the ropes burnt away like flax in a fire, his bindings coming undone. Spotting a fresh jawbone of a donkey, Samson picked it up.
With it he slaughtered one thousand men.

Then Samson said, 'With the jawbone of a donkey I laid them in heaps. With the jawbone of a donkey I have killed one thousand men.'

Samson was now very thirsty and he said to Yahweh, 'You have given your servant this great salvation, but now must I die of thirst and fall into the hands of the uncircumcised?'

So Yahweh split open the basin at Lehi and water gushed out, and Samson drank and was revived.

Samson became judge in Israel for twenty years during the days of the Philistines.
