After Gideon died, again the Israelites prostituted themselves to the Baals, making Baal-Berith their god.

They forgot Yahweh who had rescued them from their enemies, and they did not show gratitude to Gideon's family after all the good things he had done for them.
Gideon's son Abimelech went to the leading men of Shechem and said, 'Which is better, to have seventy of Gideon's sons ruling over you or one? Remember, I am your flesh and blood.'
The leading men of Shechem were inclined to support Abimelech, saying, 'He is our relative.' And they gave him seventy shekels of silver from the temple of Baal-Berith.
Abimelech used the silver to hire some worthless, reckless adventurers to follow him.
