Yahweh said to Joshua, 'Take the whole army to attack Ai. Do to Ai what you did to Jericho, except this time take their loot and their cattle for yourselves.'

'Set an ambush behind the city.'

Joshua selected 30,000 of his best warriors and told them, 'Set an ambush behind the city. I and all the army will advance on the city. When they come out to engage us, we will run away, luring them away from the city.'

'You will then rise from your hiding position and take the city. You must set it on fire as Yahweh commands.'

Early the next morning Joshua and the army marched near to the front of the city.

When the king of Ai saw this, he and all the men of the city hurried out to meet Israel in battle.

Joshua and all Israel allowed themselves be driven back, and they fled toward the desert. They chased Joshua and were lured away from the city.
Not a single man was left in Ai, leaving the city undefended.

The men in ambush then rose up and took the city, and immediately set it on fire.

When the men of Ai turned around, they saw the smoke from the city rising into the sky and were too shocked to run in any direction.

Then Joshua and the Israelites turned and attacked the men of Ai.

The men who had taken the city also came out to fight, and the men of Ai were surrounded.

The Israelies struck them down until there was no one left alive, and none who escaped.

But they captured the king of Ai alive and brought him to Joshua.

Joshua hung the king of Ai on a tree, and left him there until evening.

At sunset Joshua ordered his body taken down from the tree. It was then thrown down at the entrance of the city gate.

The number of people who were killed that day, men and women, was 12,000--the entire population of Ai.
