Yahweh then said to Moses, 'Take vengeance on the Midianites. Treat the Midianites as enemies and kill them. After that you will be gathered to your people.'
So Moses sent 12,000 men armed for battle, with Phineas the priest carrying the trumpets for the battle cry.

The Israelites took the Midianite women and children as captives. They took their cattle, their flocks, and all their wealth.

Then they burned down all the cities in which the Midianites had lived.

They brought the captives, spoils, and plunder back to Moses at their camp.

Moses was furious at army commanders who had returned from the battle. 'Why have you spared the lives of all the women?' Moses asked.

'Kill all the male children! And kill all the women who have had sex with a man!' said Moses. 'But spare the lives of the young girls who have never had sex with a man. Keep them for yourselves.'

The women who had never had sex with a man numbered 32,000.
