When Balak learned that Balaam was coming, he went to meet him at the border of Arnon. He said to Balaam, 'Did I not urgently send messengers to summon you? Why did you not come to me?'
Balaam said to him, 'I have come after all. But can I just say anything? I will speak the words that God puts in my mouth.'

The next morning Balak took Balaam and brought him up to Bamoth-Baal where he could see the extent of the Israelite camp.

Balaam said to Balak, 'Build me seven altars here and prepare for me seven bulls and seven rams.'

Balak did as Balaam said. Then Balaam said to Balak, 'Stand beside your burnt animal sacrifices while I go away. Perhaps Yahweh will come to meet me.'
God came to meet Balaam, and Balaam said to him, 'I have prepared seven altars and sacrificed animals, one bull and one ram on each one.'

Yahweh then put a message in Balaam's mouth and said to him, 'Go back to Balak, and give him this message.'

So he went back to Balak, finding him still standing next to his burnt animal sacrifices, and he declared, 'Balak has brought me here to curse Jacob and denounce Israel, but how can I curse whom God had not cursed, or denounce whom God has not denounced?'
'I have received a command to bless, and I cannot reverse it. God perceives no wickedness nor wrongdoing in Israel. There is no omen whatsoever against Israel.'
'The Israelites will rise up like a lion, and they will not rest until they have devoured their prey and drunk the blood of the slain.'

'Israel will eat up the nations, their enemies, crushing their bones to pieces, and shooting them through with arrows. Blessed be those who bless you, and cursed those who curse you!'

Balak flew into a rage with Balaam. He struck his hands together and said 'I brought you to curse my enemies, and look, you have done nothing but bless them!'
