Now Balak was the king of Moab at the time. He saw what the Israelites did to the Amorites, and he and the Moabites were deathly afraid of them.

1 of 13 Numbers 22:4,2–3

Balak sent emissaries from Moab and, taking with them the fee for divination, they went to summon Balaam from his native land of Pethor, near the Euphrates River.

2 of 13 Numbers 22:5,7

They found Balaam and gave him the message from king Balak: 'A people coming from Egypt has overrun the whole countryside. I beg you to come and curse this people for me. For this I know: anyone who you bless is blessed, and anyone you curse is cursed.'

Balaam said to them, 'Stay the night here, and I will answer as Yahweh directs me.'

God came to Balaam and said, 'Who are these men staying with you?'

5 of 13 Numbers 22:9

Balaam said to God, 'Balak king of Moab has sent me a message: "A people from Egypt has overrun the whole country. Come now and curse them for me."'

God said to Balaam, 'Do not go with them. Do not curse this people, for they are blessed.'

In the morning Balaam got up and said to the dignitaries, 'Go back to your country, for Yahweh will not let me go with you.'

So the Moabite dignitaries went back to Balak and said, 'Balaam refuses to come with us.'

So Balak sent another delegation, this one more numerous and renown than the first.

10 of 13 Numbers 22:15

They came to Balaam and said, 'A message from Balak: Now do not refuse to come to me. I will load you with honors and do anything you say. I beg you to come and curse the people for me.'

11 of 13 Numbers 22:16–17

Balaam said to them, 'Even if Balak gave me his whole palace full of silver and gold, I could not go against Yahweh my God in anything, great or small. Now please stay the night.'

12 of 13 Numbers 22:18–19

God came to Balaam during the night and said to him, 'Have not these men come to summon you? Get up and go with them! But do only what I tell you to do.'
