Yahweh spoke to Moses and said, 'Send out men to investigate the land of Canaan which I am giving the Israelites.'
At Yahweh's order, Moses sent them from the desert of Paran. All of them were leading men of Israel, and these were their names: Shammua, Shaphat, Caleb, Igal, Hoshea, Palti, Gaddiel, Gaddi, Ammiel, Sethur, Nahbi, and Geuel.
Moses then gave Hoshea the name Joshua.

Moses said, 'Go into the highlands and see what sort of country it is: whether its inhabitants are many or few, strong or weak; whether the land is good or poor; whether the towns are open or fortified.'
'Be bold, and bring back some of the country's produce.'

They went up and investigated the country, going as far as Hebron where the descendents of the Giant lived.

Reaching the Vale of Eschol, there they lopped off a vine branch with a cluster of grapes which they carried away on a pole, as well as pomegranites and figs.

After forty days they returned from investigating the country. Making their way to Moses, Aaron, and the whole community, they displayed the country's produce.
This was the report they gave: 'We made our way into the country where you sent us. It does indeed flow with milk and honey. At the same time, its inhabitants are a powerful people, the towns are big and fortified, and yes, we saw the Anakim there.'
'The Amalekites live in the Negeb area, the Hittites, Jebusites, and Ammorites live in the highlands, and the Canaanites live by sea coast and the banks of the Jordan.'

Caleb called the people round Moses to silence and said, 'We must march in immediately and take it. We are certainly able to conquer it.'

But the men who had been with him said, 'We cannot attack these people. They are stronger than we are. All the people we saw there were of enormous size.'
'We saw giants there too -- the giants descended from the Nephilim. We felt like grasshoppers, and so we seemed to them.'

The whole community then cried out in dismay, and the people wept all night.

All the Israelites muttered at Moses and Aaron, and the whole community said to them, 'If only we had died in Egypt, or even in this desert!' Why has Yahweh brought us to this country for us to perish by the sword and our wives and children to be seized as booty?'
