Now Israel loved Joseph more than any of his other sons, because he was the son of his old age, and he made him a coat of many colors.
1 of 10 Genesis 37:3
Joseph had strange dreams and would tell his brothers about them. In his dreams Joseph saw all his brothers bowing down before him. When they heard this, his brothers hated him and said, “So you think you are king over us? That you will actually rule over us?”
One day Joseph was sent to check up on his brothers who were watching over the family’s flocks in the countryside. When they saw Joseph approaching, his brothers said, “Here comes the little dreamer. Come on, let's kill him and throw him into one of the wells. Then we’ll see what becomes of his dreams.”
When Joseph reached his brothers, they stripped him of his coat of many colors, and they took him and threw him into the well.
As some Midianite merchants approached, the brothers decided it would be more profitable for them to pull Joseph up out of the well and sell him as a slave.
They sent the coat of many colors to their father. He recognized it and said, "A wild animal has devoured him! Joseph is surely torn to pieces!"
The merchants brought Joseph to Egypt. An Egyptian named Potiphar, who was one of Pharaoh's officials, bought Joseph from them.
Joseph lived in the house of his Egyptian master, and when his master saw that Yahweh was with him, and how Yahweh made all his undertakings successful, he put him in charge of his household.
Now Joseph was well built and handsome. And Potiphar's wife noticed Joseph and commanded him to have sex with her. But he refused, saying, "How could I do something so wicked, and sin against God?"
After many days of refusing such commands, she screamed and said, “This Hebrew tried to have sex with me!” Potiphar was angered and had Joseph arrested and put in prison.
