Laban had two daughters. The elder was Leah, and she had weak eyes. The younger was Rachel, and she was shapely and beautiful.
Now Jacob came to the land of the people of the east. There he saw a well with a large stone covering it. When all the flocks of sheep would gather, the shepherds would roll away the stone and water the sheep.
Jacob asked the shepherds, "Where are you from?" "Haran," they replied. "Do you know Laban? How is he?"
"He’s well," they said, "and here comes his daughter Rachel with his sheep."

He watered his uncle Laban’s sheep, then kissed Rachel and wept loudly.
When Laban heard about his nephew Jacob, he rushed to meet him and brought him back to his house, saying, "Surely, you are my own flesh and blood!"
And Jacob stayed with Laban for a month, and he fell in love with Rachel.
Then Laban said to Jacob, "Should you work for me for nothing just because you’re a relative? Tell me what your wages shall be."

Jacob loved Rachel, so he said, "I will work for you for seven years in return for your younger daughter Rachel." Laban replied, "Better that I give her to you than some other man, so stay with me."
And so Jacob worked for seven years in exchange for Rachel. But they were like a few days to him because he loved her.

"That’s not how it’s done around here, marrying off the younger before the older," replied Laban. "But complete this wedding feast week with her, and we will give you the other girl as well—in exchange for seven more years of work."
Jacob did as Laban said, and after he completed the week of Leah’s wedding feast, Laban gave him his daughter Rachel as a wife.
