When the men set out from there, they looked toward Sodom. Abraham was with them to send them on their way. And Yahweh said, "Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do?"
Then Yahweh said, "The outcry over Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and their sin is weighty. I will go down and see if what they have done is truly in accordance with the outcry."
The men turned from there and went toward Sodom, while Abraham remained standing before Yahweh. Then Abraham came near him and said, "Will you destroy the righteous along with the wicked? What if there are 50 righteous people in the city? Won’t the ruler of the earth do what is just?"
And Yahweh said, "If I find 50 righteous people in Sodom, I will spare the whole place for their sake." And Abraham said, "What if the 50 righteous people are lacking 5? Will you destroy the whole city because of 5 people?"
Yahweh said, "I will not destroy it if I find 45 there." And Abraham said, "What if 40 are found there?" Yahweh said, "For the sake of the 40, I will not do it."
And Abraham said, "Let it not anger Yahweh, but what if 30 are found there?" And Yahweh said, "If I find 30, I will not do it."
