When it was early in the morning, they had Jesus bound and handed him over to Pilate the governor. They did not enter into the praetorium themselves so that they would not be defiled and could still eat the passover meal.

So Pilate came out to them and asked, 'What accusation do you bring against this man?'

They replied, 'If he were not a criminal, we would not have handed him over to you.'

Then Pilate said to them, 'Take him yourselves and judge him according to your own law!' When he learned that Jesus was a Galilean from Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod who also happened to be in Jerusalem at that time.

When Herod saw Jesus, he was very happy, for he had wanted to see him for a long time, because he had heard about him and was hoping to see him perform some miraculous sign, and he questioned him at length.

But Jesus gave him no reply.

So Herod and his soldiers ridiculed and mocked him, dressing him in an elegant robe.

Herod sent him back to Pilate, and on that day Herod and Pilate became friends though before they had been enemies. Pilate went inside the Praetorium and summoned Jesus.<br>

Jesus replied, 'You say so.'<br>

Pilate said, 'I am not a Jew, am I? Your own people and chief priests handed you over to me. What have you done?'<br>

But to the amazement of the governor, Jesus did not answer to a single accusation.<br>

So Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged.<br>

The soldiers clothed him in a purple robe and twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head.<br>

So Jesus came outside, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe, and Pilate said, 'Do you refuse to speak to me? Don’t you know I have the authority to release you or to crucify you?'<br>

Jesus replied, 'You would have no authority over me at all, unless it was given to you from above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of greater sin.'<br>

Now it was the governor's custom during the feast to release a prisoner to the crowd, whoever they chose. At that time they had in custody a notorious prisoner named Jesus Barabbas.<br>

But they all shouted out together, 'Release Barabbas for us!' (This was a man who had been thrown into prison for starting a riot in the city, and for murder.)<br>

The Crucifixion

The Crucifixion
